I have been hooked onto American Idol ever since I first heard Simon Cowell’s scathing comments about the contestants. Most people will agree with me that his presence makes all the difference to the show and sets it apart from the deluge of reality singing contests that we are inflicted with. When Indian Idol first appeared on Indian television, I was pretty keen to see it. Imagine my shock when I found that in our desi version Anu Malik had donned the role of Simon Cowell.

Now, Simon Cowell has managed to etch his imprint so firmly on the design of the show that all other international shows like Australian Idol or Canadian Idol based on the American Idol make sure that they get someone to duplicate him in the role of the judge. The reason is obvious. After all, a personality like Cowell’s sends the TRP rates zooming. So, the first Indian choice for Cowell-like judge happened to be none other than Anu Malik.

As I mentioned before, my first reaction was one of utter disbelief. I mean, how can you replicate a Simon Cowell who despite being blunt and at times, very rude has a lot of depth and substance to him with a Anu Malik who seems superficial through and through? The great thing about Cowell is that with every contestant he comes up with a critical comment that has the flavor of originality to it and his critique always has the potential to be used constructively. It wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that the popularity of the show hinges on his remarks. With Anu Malik, the judging becomes very personal, lacks value and appears very gimmicky, to say the least.

In the third season of the Indian Idol, the creative staff brought in Javed Akhtar as the new answer to Simon Cowell. I really admire Mr. Akhtar for his brilliant lyrics and scriptwriting. Watching his interviews is a treat as he enlivens one and all with his witty remarks and sharp mind. However, on reality shows he comes across as a pompous bore who is putting on an act. A far cry from Simon Cowell.

More on this tomorrow…..
